Air conditioners are great during the summer when the temperature is hot. They give you that instant feeling of coolness and relieve you from those dreaded hot humid days. So we should at least take care of these things that give us relief and comfort. But do you know how?
Obviously, you should maintain your central air conditioning system because it’s a large investment in your home. But you need to remember that a cleaned and tuned-up system will run more efficiently…and you’ll spend less to cool you home.
In maintaining your air conditioner, the first thing that you should do is check the blowers and filters. This should be regularly done. Cleaning the blowers and filters is one of the most important aspects of having a precision tune-up performed on your home’s ac unit. A blocked or clogged filter is one of the main reasons why your unit could stop working over the summer.
The second thing you should check is the outside condensing unit. It shouldn’t be blocked or obstructed. The air that is being blown out needs to escape. So be sure that you home’s landscaping isn’t blocking the unit. One of the benefits of having a tune-up is the fins of the condensing unit get washed down…removing any grass clippings or weeds that may have gotten trapped.
And most importantly, you want to have the refrigerant levels measured. If you keep adding freon, it’s a sign that you’ve got a leak somewhere in the lines. And that must be fixed by a professional who can evacuate the system and do a nitrogen test to find the leak. At that point, the leak is repaired by rebraizing the copper line or joint. Then another nitrogen test is performed to make sure the unit can hold the pressure. And finally, the system can be recharged to factory specifications.
By cleaning and maintaining your air conditioner, it will last for a lot longer. It won’t break down as much. And it will run more efficiently.
This isn’t a do-it-yourself project. Have your unit cleaned and checked by a qualified professional. The small price you invest in a tune-up will be well worth it in the long run. Why? Because it’s always better to prevent the unit from breaking down than have it repaired.
